Just like Demonetization, the GS4 Syllabus is noble in its objective but hastily thought and ill- planned. Too many topics, verbose, repeating. Hence difficult to do any ‘trend’ analysis against previous years, if we follow the syllabus sequence given by UPSC. Therefore, I’ve combined and bifurcated syllabus topics; and I’m combining ‘case study’ marks within theory topics. ![]() Women are accorded the greatest respect in Vedas. Like previous year- theory worth 1. Like 2. 01. 3, affection for thinkers returns- four question x 1. This time even Max Weber asked so I suppose those who dumped Public Administration due to adverse scaling- Weber is singing to them “काटा हमारा पानी न मांगे, हम भी है वो काले सांप!”Except John Rowl’ straight forward question, rest of the thinker questions were difficult because that much death not covered about Kautilya or Weber or in most of the ethics books. And difficult to recall all seven sins of Gandhi, verbatim. Each year minimum one question on family – society values vs. First time asked question on Social influence / persuasion as a tool for Swatchh Bharat Mission. Sufficient maal available in Kurukshetra Magazine October 2. Civil service foundation values: easy question this year- on “impartiality” because same you’ve to prepare for GSM2 as well. This time land aquisition policy asked- but topic is no longer in limelight since ordinance- raj of 2. First time asked direct question from 2nd ARC - on code of public services. Nothing direct from citizen charter since inception. This year “NRI Saraswati wants to open free school” plot directly lifted from Rajnikanth movie Shivaji the boss. Seems every angle worth asking about RTI – has been asked. So won’t see another question for 2. Examiner has grown more concerned about ethics within private companies- two case studies each year in 2. Only once asked about ethical issues in international relation and funding. This topic is so vague and small that not possible to routinely ask from here. Hence I say- “ill- planned syllabus made up in haste”. Themes in UPSC Mains GS4 case studies. There is a helpless weaker section (children, girl students, woman with no document, dalit cook) and you’ve to intervene. In some of these cases, they may not be even eager to get helped. In work culture at office: sexual harassment, work deadline, Chalta hai mindset, hush- hush to windup a file/tender/acquisition, pressure from above to reveal information, help a relative etc. There is a friend with impractical idealism and he/she seeks your help about whether to join civil services, whether to whistleblow on her river- polluting company? Displacement seems to be ‘recurring’ dilemma faced by public and private organizations each year. Sometimes examiner worried that landless poor have to migrate to urban areas. Sometimes he wants rural youth to stay within backward rural areas. Sometimes he’s worried about ‘influx’ of migrants coming to backward area due to new company! Sometimes you get lucky and directly cutpaste points from GSM2 and GSM3 in case studies related to disaster management, role of civil services and pressure groups. PS: I’ve written sarcastic “real- world” solutions below each case study. They should not be taken seriously. In official exam, every effort must be put to fake a “Boy scout Raja Harishchandra” answer. Mains- 2. 01. 6: GS papers over, what’s the big picture? In their enthusiasm, UPSC reformers prescribed truckload of topics the syllabus of GS1 to 4and now fumbling to even come up with unique questions each year- so same old themes repeated and recycled over and over again- be it jobless growth, dem. Smart Cities vs PURA” in GSM1 to GSM3 or the “displacement dilemma” case study in GSM4. And still their question- database so bankrupted that last minute whatever Google “I’m feeling lucky” term is turned into a question- be “Macbride commission” or “Allelopathy”. End result? since too many syllabus topics vs. So, rather than studying any topic genuinely from standard reference books, everyone forced to rely on ready made bullet point digests made by third party. So, UPSC itself is becoming an impediment against the broader objectives of real learning and demographic dividend. Anyways, let’s check the topicwise papers since ethics was introduced in 2. Block#1] Basic, Thinkers, EQEthics- Basic Theory. A combination of garments made from same fabric including a jacket and a trouser is termed as "suit" in fashion and clothing. Suits originally came in existence from Britain as country wear which have now become the most common style of formal wear all over the world. Suits can be worn in daily walks of life and in various places like work, wedding, social gathering, formal conferences and meetings etc. Depending on the type of design, cut and cloth, such as two and three piece or single breasted and double breasted, determine the social and work suitability of the garment. Suits can be sold in many ways; few of them are as follows. Bespoke Suits : A custom made suit which have provisions to hand pick each and every part of the suit and get it stitched from the choice of fabric to the choices of cufflinks and inner suit linings as well, bespoke tailoring is one of the major tailoring arts which are appreciated since ages. Made to measure suits: Here, a predefined design is selected by customer and then the design and dimensions are altered and made with the customers wish. The tailored balance from both the sides is what makes a suit to stand out; the main specialty of a suit is its finishing and fitting which should be drawn from a canvas fitting frame which allows the garment to be shaped perfectly from neck to the shoulders without leaving any wrinkles or unfit sections. ![]() The two main cuts are . Single Breasted Suits : The sides overlap very slightly, with a single column of buttons. Not all of us are the types of people who worry about things like that, of course. But those of us who do generally worry for good reason—my current oven, for. Some decks, while using the French suits, give each suit a different color to make the suits more distinct from each other. In bridge, such decks are known as no. The bigger the case, the harder it is to get in and out of pockets. When I experimented for a few months with a battery case I found myself occasionally pulling the. ![]() Double Breasted Suits : A design with two columns of buttons, spanned by a large overlap of the left and right sides. Fabric. Wool is the most preferable fabric from which a suit is drawn. The main yarns for a suit which produce worsteds arewoolens. These can be woven in a number of ways producing fresco ,tweed, flannel, and gabardine among others. Each fabric have its own weight and feel where the fineness of these are described as an S (or Super S) number describing the fineness of the fibers measured by average fiber diameter, the finer the fabric the more it would be delicate and subtle. Jackets. Front Buttons. Expert Alterations – Very expensive, you may want to look at a new suit. Unless you live in a large city, you will have to ship your garment to a trained tailor. Single- Breasted suits usually have two or three buttons where as other unusual suits which have four buttons are usually diner suits with a black tie. Four or more buttoned suits are very rare to find whereas zoot suits have as many as six buttons due to their long length and fit. The other main factor in a jacket is the placement of buttons which defines the comfort of a suit while sitting and standing; mainly the suit have 2 buttons which are tied together and other one lies inside of the suit piping but can be used to button the suit in a more comfortable way. Double- breasted jackets have half of their buttons useful,as the second row is for display purposes only. Some rare jackets have an unusual style of button rows as these styles have evolved from late 1. Lapels. The jacket's lapels can be notched or stepped, peaked or pointed and shawl. Every lapel style carries different design and look, and is worn with variety of suits. The notched lapels are found on single- breasted jackets which are most casual in style. Double- breasted jackets mostly come with peaked lapels. Shawl lapels are a style derived from the Victorian informal evening wear, which are not normally seen except for dinner suits. Pockets. Jackets and Coats have many styles of pockets from inner pockets to main outer pockets which are mostly patch, flap or besom pockets. The patch style pockets are with its single piece of fabric stitched directly upon the front of the jacket; these patch pockets have a sporting look and are seen on summer linen suits. The flap pocket is the most generally preferred pocket style for side pockets having a top flap of the same color and fabric where as a jetted pocket is the most formal having a small strip of fabric which is taping the top and bottom of the pocket. This style is seen in formal meetings, dinners and other formal meetings. Sleeves. Suits in almost every style have four to five buttons on each sleeve whereas the sleeves are sewn from top of the shoulder to wrist of the hand and have buttons to tie at the end of the sleeve called as a cuff. Vents. A vent is a slit/cut on the bottom rear of the suit jacket, which was invented for a sporting option which lets riding easier it is sporting in other style which are chosen as morning coats, formal coats and overcoats. Mainly today there are three styles of venting present: 1)Single Venting (The one in the Rear bottom)2)No Venting/ Vent- less (well fitted and casual coats are mostly vent- less)3)Double Vents(one vent on each side of the coat)Vents are convenient and provides comfort, Vent- less style of tailoring comes from Italian tradition whereas double vented depicts the English and British culture. Waist Coats. These coats are also known as "Vests" in American. Englishdialect. Waistcoats were always worn along with a suit way back in 1. Due to rationing during Second World War, their existences and presence was fading away and was reappearing again and again from 1. In those time a metal pocket watch was suspended which was hooked on a button through a button hole and these kind of watches existed. Since the First World War men started to wear a wrist watch along with a full suit apart from evening dress. Many references can be found from the 1. Traditionally the last button in the row of the jacket is kept unbuttoned because of the same reason of the vent which is to provide ease while bending or riding. Trousers. Suit Trousers are always preferred to be of the same material as of the jacket, since 1. As time passed by the modern style of sports jackets and suits jackets were evolving which were worn over a matching or contrasted trouser. Accessories. Many accessories are there which can be worn along with a suit few of them are Pocket Square, Cuff links, Tie pins, brooches and many more. By most accounts, Apple’s new smartphone, the “i. Phone 8,” is due out soon—in September 2. But I feel confident in saying the company’s most groundbreaking release for the year actually happened earlier this summer, at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California. At that event, Apple unveiled “ARKit,” a new, free set of software tools that anyone can use to build impressive new apps and experiences on the i. Phone and i. Pad. ![]() The “AR” in “ARKit” refers to “augmented reality,” a technology that places interactive virtual objects and effects into your view of the real world, blending the virtual world with physical reality. Today, this is usually accomplished by apps that use a smartphone’s (or other device’s) camera to show you a view of the real world in front of you, then layering virtual objects on top of it. For example, some of the most popularly used AR features right now are the “lenses” or face filters in Snapchat—the effects that put animal ears on your head or warp your face in weird ways. Another one is Pokémon Go, the gaming app that made the pocket monsters look as though they were bouncing around your desk or the street. What these apps have in common is that the virtual objects inside of them appear to be inhabiting or changing real- world scenes—“augmenting” our reality. A long time ago, Apple made it difficult for third- party developers to make a good media player for …Read more But those apps were custom- built by pro software developers. What makes Apple’s ARKit version of augmented reality so exciting is that it’s not an app—instead, it’s a free way for anybody to build new AR apps that will be able to run on many of Apple’s i. OS devices from the last few years. And the proof is in the pudding: Apple’s ARKit has already only been publicly available for about two months, but already, independent software developers have created some incredible- looking experiences for the i. Phone—everything from virtual portals you can enter to putting virtual zombies in your living room and more. Even Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has gotten in on the fun with an ARKit short film. I’ve been interested in augmented reality for years, so when Apple announced ARKit, I was thrilled. If you feel the same or are just interested in experimenting with it yourself, here’s how you can get started. Check to make sure you have a compatible i. OS device. ARKit runs only Apple i. OS devices containing an A9 processor (or newer). That limits it to the following devices, according to Redmond. Pie: i. Phone 6s and 6s Plusi. Phone 7 and 7 Plusi. Phone SEi. Pad Pro (9. Pad (2. 01. 7)Presumably, the new i. Phone 8 lineup will also support ARKit. You’ll also want to make sure the camera on your i. OS device is working, as ARKit relies upon it. And you need a cable for connecting your device to your Mac computer. Download i. OS 1. Phone or i. Pad. Once you have one of these compatible i. OS devices handy, you’ll need to download i. OS 1. 1 on it. That’s the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, and it’s only available as a beta right now, which means it potentially contains bugs and could mess up some things on your device. If this is a major concern, buy or use another device that’s not your primary one. Or, wait for the official release of i. OS 1. 1, which is also expected in September 2. If you don’t want to wait, you can download the i. OS 1. 1 beta and get started. To do this, you’ll need to enroll in Apple’s Beta Software Program. This is free, but requires anywhere between 2. Head over here and follow the instructions. Check to make sure you have a compatible Mac computer. You’ll also need a computer for coding your ARKit app. Specifically, a Mac with the free operating system mac OS Sierra 1. That means the following machines are eligible: Mac. Book (Late 2. 00. Mac. Book Pro (Mid 2. Mac. Book Air (Late 2. Mac mini (Mid 2. 01. Mac (Late 2. 00. 9 or newer)Mac Pro (Mid 2. Later this year, Apple will publicly release i. OS 1. 1, which includes a one- handed mode for the…Read more Register for an Apple developer account. You can use a free or paid developer account to get started with ARKit. If you already have a regular consumer Apple account that you use to buy apps and such on your i. Phone/i. Pad/Mac, you can upgrade this to a free or paid developer account. Using a web browser on your Mac computer, navigate to Apple’s developer account sign- in page and choose which option is right for you. Download Xcode 9 (which contains ARKit) for your Mac for free from Apple’s developer website. On your Mac, sign into your Apple developer account, then head here and click “Download” in the top right corner to get Xcode 9, Apple’s program for programming (a tautology, yes!). Warning: you’ll need at least 4. GB free of hard drive space to download this, and then Xcode itself takes up 9. GB of hard drive space. Launch Xcode 9 and connect your i. OS device to your computer with a cable. On your Mac, unzip your Xcode 9 download by double clicking it, then drag the Xcode app into your Applications folder and double click it to launch it. Plug in the i. OS device you have with i. OS 1. 1 installed. Create a new AR app project template in Xcode. In Xcode on your Mac, click “File,” “New,” and select “Project.” This should pull up a grid of options. Click on “Augmented Reality App.”Fill out your new AR app’s information in Xcode. Apple requires you fill out the following information for your new AR app. You can name it anything you’d like, and be sure to also select a “Team,” even if you’re an individual (if you don’t have one yet, you’ll get the option to create one.) Keep everything else checked. In the “language” option, can also choose between Swift, Apple’s new programming language, and Objective- C, its older one. Both will allow you to build an AR app. If you’re new to programming, Swift might be the better bet as it’s what Apple plans to use for all of its tools going forward. Finally, you can choose your “Content technology,” selecting between Scene. Kit, Sprite. Kit, and Metal. These are different rendering engines for displaying graphics. All three will let you build AR apps, but offer different trade- offs, some of which are described here (basically: Scene. Kit for 3. D graphics, Sprite. Kit for 2. D, Metal for more complicated scenes). For purposes of this demo, I selected “Scene. Kit.” You’ll also need to put your project in a folder on your computer. Select anywhere you want, this doesn’t matter much. Select your connected i. OS device to receive your new AR app. In Xcode on your Mac, select “Window” from the top menu bar, click “Devices and Simulators” and double click your i. OS device. Make sure you check the box that says “Show as run destination.” You may get a pop up on your i. OS device now saying “Untrusted Developer” and giving you some instructions to go to your i. OS device’s “Settings” page to allow this app. If this happens, go ahead and find your “Settings” app on your i. OS device, tap it, scroll down to “General” and tap it, then scroll further to “Profiles and Device Management,” and you should be able to find your Apple developer email address. Tap this and it should allow you to install your ARapp. Run your first demo AR app. Apple includes a very simple AR demo with Xcode for you to get a sense of what you can build with ARKit. This demo displays a fighter jet in the air in front of your device’s camera. In order to see it in action, first make sure your i. OS device is selected in the device picker dropdown menu in the top left hand corner of Xcode. Then, look up at the top menu bar in Xcode. Find “Product,” click it, and then click “Run.” The top status indicator in Xcode should begin flickering with activity and messages, then it should launch your app on your i. OS device! To stop your demo app, go back to “Product” in Xcode and scroll down to “Stop.”That’s it, you’re well on your way to using ARKit! For more information on adding your own new 3. You’d think the library would want your used books! But outside of the occasional used- book sale, libraries usually only get their books from specific vendors. By dumping your used books on them, you’re actually creating work for volunteers and making things worse. We talked to librarian Stephanie Anderson, Assistant Director of Selection at Book. Ops (the shared technical services collaboration of New York Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library). She explained what’s so bad about dumping your books on the library, and why they don’t want them. Ask First“Almost all libraries have a well- defined policy on donations,” says Anderson. And if the library does want your books, you don’t have to read this post! Congratulations! Most Libraries Can’t Use Your Books. Anderson knows that would- be donors have good intentions. But, she says, “when you insist on donating books to a library that doesn’t accept them, or insist on donating books that a library can’t use, it’s disrespectful of the institution you’re trying to support.”“You would not believe how many people get angry and argue with librarians when they learn about our donation policies,” says Anderson. Picture that embarrassing kind of person, throwing a fit because they didn’t do their research. Never be that person! An important aspect of having well- rounded finances is charity. Giving is generally accepted by…Read more Why They Don’t Want Your Books In short, books aren’t all the same, and the ones you’re getting rid of aren’t the ones the library needs, says Anderson. ![]() ![]() Not even the new ones: In a best case scenario, we can do one of two things with a donated book: add it to the collection, or put it in a book sale. Many novice book donors expect us to do the former, but we almost never do, because it is highly unlikely that we need the book donated at the time it is donated. In order to spend book budgets wisely, we do a lot of planning, and that planning can’t depend on book donations. Instead, libraries buy from vendors. It’s the only way to reliably match supply to demand, and to get fresh books that definitely don’t have bedbugs or other hidden defects. And buying the physical book isn’t the only part that costs money. Even If They Use Your Book, It’s Not Free When the library adds a new book to their collection, they don’t just unbox it and slide it onto the shelf. They have to add a barcode, spine label, and laminate it or add a clear Mylar cover so it lasts longer. They have to assign that barcode and add the book to the catalog. These all cost the library money, as does the time of the staff member who processes the book,” says Anderson. Libraries never have enough staff time.”The library also needs space to shelve each new book. Because they’re already doing their job buying all the books they need, your unneeded book is just using up space until the staff spends more time recycling it. When You Can Donate Books Of course, this doesn’t apply to book sales, which the library uses to raise funds and to dispose of its own extra books. They won’t always need 2. John Grisham.) Still, check the donation policy, which will probably disallow textbooks, magazines, and other materials that no one will buy. If you “donate” those, again, you’re creating work for the library. As mentioned, there are other exceptions, which you learned when you googled your library’s donation policy! The Brooklyn Public Library, for example, is running a pilot program at its central location, accepting new and gently- used books. What to Donate Instead You can still help! Most libraries will happily take your (tax- deductible) monetary donations. Many of us depend on these donations to keep our collections in good shape,” says Anderson, “and every dollar helps.”You can also volunteer, which will help you learn how libraries work, and appreciate the many things they do behind the scenes (and the many services they provide outside of books). Remember, most libraries are understaffed, and you’ll free up highly educated librarians for more technical work, so they’ll appreciate the help. Here’s What to Do With All Those Books Well, the library probably told you where else to donate them. You could make money (or store credit) by selling them to a used bookstore. Or, and this will shock you, you’re allowed to throw them out. It’s part of the book circle of life!” says Anderson. It might feel weird! Books are magic. But they’re also produced in mass quantities, and now they’re all digitized as well. If your book is at all rare, it’s selling for lots of money on Amazon and Abe. Books, and that’s where you should take it. Otherwise don’t worry, there are plenty of copies somewhere for anyone who wants to read them. If your library doesn’t have this book, suggest that they buy a copy. They’d rather have a new one from a vendor, honestly. Anderson points out that almost everywhere in the country, books are recyclable. So your old books will get a second life, as an Amazon box for your new books. |
